The top 3 reasons women over 40 struggle with motivation

Have you ever thought to yourself, “why is it so hard to get and stay motivated to work out, eat right, move my body throughout the day so my joints are less painful, etc.?

 

You’re not alone. This is a common concern among over 40 women so I wanted to touch on 3 reasons you may be struggling with this and what you can do about it. 

  1. Lack of Support: Women may feel unsupported or misunderstood in their health and fitness goals, particularly if they don’t have a strong support system or access to resources such as fitness professionals or community programs tailored to their needs.

The solution:
Not only can it feel incredibly lonely when you don’t have others to support your efforts of being the healthiest version of yourself, but it can be downright hard to keep on without a vast amount of discipline. A study conducted by the American Society for Training and Development (ASTD) looked at how likely we are to hit our goals based on how we approached them:

  • If you have a goal – expect 10% success
  • If you have a goal + commit to it – success rates increased to 25% 
  • If you have a goal + commit to it + take action, there was a 40% success rate
  • If you have a goal + commit to it + take action + have a plan – success rates rose to 50%
  • If you have a goal + commit to it + take action + have a plan + have an expert keeping you accountable – success rates soared to 95%

2. Hormonal Changes: As women age, hormonal changes, particularly during perimenopause and menopause, can lead to shifts in metabolism, which, in turn, downshift your energy levels, and your mood. Fluctuations in estrogen and progesterone levels may affect motivation and make it harder to maintain a healthy lifestyle.

The solution:

Ladies, this is not only common, it’s normal once you hit perimenopause which can begin as early as age 35. 100% of women who live long enough will go through menopause and the good news is that there is no reason to suffer with symptoms that show up in perimenopause. As I’ve mentioned along with several hormone experts I’ve had on the show over the past year and a half, make sure you are meeting with a professional who specializes in hormones, this is typically not your OB/GYN as they get very little hormone training, nor is it your GP. 3. Increased Responsibilities: Women in their 40s and beyond often have multiple responsibilities, such as caring for children or aging parents, managing work commitments, and maintaining a household. These competing demands can leave little time and energy for prioritizing personal health and fitness.

The solution:

I interviewed 13 women recently to find out their most common concerns and roadblocks to making sustainable changes in their health and one of the top answers was ‘overwhelm’ due to trying to fit everything in. 

Listen to episode #98 on how to get better results faster to ensure you are relieved of some of the overwhelm you’re feeling. And if overwhelm is one of your biggest concerns, I want you to repeat and adopt the following phrase: 

 

Today I’m going to improve by 1%. The theory of this mindset is that, as women, we tend to be all or nothing. We’re either all in or all out. This sets us up for failure right off the bat since life is happening constantly (I discussed this and ways to work around it in episode #105) and when we feel we have to be all in and things get crazy, we then feel like failures which perpetuates a negative mindset towards ourselves. 

 

So if you’re in that season of shifting sand and you feel you can barely gain any ground, aim to improve by 1% a day.

What this can look like:

a. Today I’ll start with a breakfast packed with 30 grams of protein. Boom, 1% better!

b. Today I’ll stop eating 2-3 hours before bed instead of snacking late. 1% better, baby!

c. Today, I’ll throw my shoes in the car and walk right after lunch instead of heading straight back to work. Yep, 1% improvement.

d. Maybe protein is a huge battle and you need to commit to doing it consistently to build a habit so your 1% better will be to do it every single day for a month. Every day you’re consistent, that’s 1% better! 

You get the idea. Just do something today you didn’t do yesterday and aim to build on it.
