Minimizing Hot Flashes Naturally

Symptoms such as hot flashes or night sweats are called vasomotor symptoms and they’re among some of the most common and uncomfortable in perimenopause and menopause. But other symptoms like, changes in sleep, mood, libido, cognition, vaginal dryness, and more, can accompany these already misery-inducing symptoms.

 

Today we’re going to focus on some natural ways you can offset hot flashes, specifically, making your time in this phase of life more comfortable.

 

Just a note that it’s always a good idea to talk to your doctor before starting any new supplementation and be certain there are no interactions with anything you are taking and anything new you are adding.

 

It’s also important to note that natural products often take longer than prescriptions to take effect. Many notice changes around 4 weeks in or so, so be patient and consistent.

Black Cohosh

This plant is the most widely studied to treat VMS or vasomotor symptoms. Along with the ability to minimize hot flashes and night sweats, it’s also shown to be beneficial for anxiety and sleep. 

Curcumin

As a component of the turmeric spice, it’s well known for it’s anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and anti cancer properties, but it’s also been shown to reduce hot flashes. Look for the addition of peperine in your curcumin supplement to ensure improved absorption.

Flax Seeds

In a small study in 140 menopausal women, those who took flax seeds reported significant improvements in a variety of menopausal symptoms and overall quality of life. These are nutrient dense and a good source of fiber and healthy fats. It’s easy to add into salads or smoothies.

Chasteberry

In a small study in 140 menopausal women, those who took flax seeds reported significant improvements in a variety of menopausal symptoms and overall quality of life. These are nutrient dense and a good source of fiber and healthy fats. It’s easy to add into salads or smoothies.

A recent study in 52 women taking chasteberry showed significant reductions in hot flashes and anxiety. In my research I did find that, although considered generally safe, it may have mild side effects such as headaches, digestive distress, nausea, and itchy skin and shouldn’t be taken if you are on antipsychotics or on medication for parkinsons.
