Don’t Pull Me Down With You

There’s a lady I see on occasion who is kind, giving, caring, and truly a servant, but she has an Eeyore type of outlook on aging and she often, unknowingly, projects that onto others. She tried to project it on me, recently.

I had forgotten something that she told me and she just smiled and said…yep, that happens at our age.

Huh…isn’t that interesting. Surely when I forgot something when I was in my 20’s, that would never have been a remark I would have heard. Yet now, at 51, I’m thrown into the pool of…yep, must be because you’re getting old.

Proof!

A study of 14,000 adults over age 50, co-authored by experts at Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health, found that the people who had the highest satisfaction with aging had a 43% lower risk of dying from any cause over a four-year period compared with those who were the least satisfied.

The study also found that people more satisfied with the aging process had lower risk for conditions such as diabetes, stroke, cancer, and heart disease; better cognitive functioning; were more likely to engage in physical activity and less likely to have trouble sleeping; were less lonely and depressed; and were more optimistic with a greater sense of purpose.

49? Again??

I have a friend who recently turned 51 and when I told her happy birthday, her response was, thanks, I’ve decided I’m actually only 49 and I’m going to stay here. When I commented that her age was amazing and I was excited that we’re now the same age her response was, please tell me what there is to look forward to. Tell me how life is going to be like at 80 if this is how I feel now. 

We’re scheduled to have coffee soon because as you can imagine, I have a lot to say. 

You’ve heard me mention this idea before, but I feel like it’s so incredibly crucial to your ability to age well, age slow, and even reverse aging, that I’m dedicating an entire show to the topic.

It’s Time to Get Honest

What we’re going to get to is, how do you talk about aging. But before we can get to the nitty gritty, what we need to answer honestly is, how do you FEEL about aging. 

If you grew up hearing how Great Aunt Martha feels about her aching back and how getting old is just hell, and maybe you heard your grandmother or mother talk about how their boobs butt and face all fell by age 45… 

Then you may have some limiting beliefs around your own aging. God love them. They had no idea the seeds they were sowing into your future. But change doesn’t come from blame. We are responsible for curating the creature we were designed to be. 

And that starts with our thoughts.

The Mission, Should you Choose to Accept It

So we’re about to get super practical…and this is a serious challenge. Not one I want to throw out there just to hear myself talk, I want to illicit a shift in your soul that will only come from paying attention to the old thought patterns that are keeping you stuck.

Challenge: When you find yourself thinking or saying something negative about how your body is just breaking down because of age, replace that mistruth with something that’s actually true (notice I didn’t say positive, I said true). But what is true?

If your back hurts and you don’t have a specific injury you’ve incurred, replace the excuse that it’s linked to age with something like, “ My back hurts because I’m sitting too much and not moving enough. This stops today because I’m committing to 500 extra steps daily”

This isn’t Pollyanna positivity, this is being honest with ourself about how we view where we are and then shifting to an actionable step. See the difference?

This may sound trite or unimportant, but this crucial step to shifting our thought life is actually rooted in neuroscience which tells us that creating new thought patterns can change our outcome.

The biggest challenge to this, well, challenge is hearing yourself think or say these things. Catching yourself as soon as possible. Because for so many of us, we are so accustomed to chalking up every ache, pain, lump, bump, and misfortune to age that we may not even hear ourselves saying these things.

Determine right now that you’re going to begin shifting your thoughts and words…seriously, like pause right now if you need to and tell yourself this is happening.

Speak Life or Death…It’s Your Choice

Words have power. Not only are you solidifying these lies as truths when you say them but others are hearing you and you have now become Great Aunt Martha to someone else…putting pebbles of doubt that become stones and boulders that they cling to as their truth. 

That should sting a bit. I believe with everything inside of me that we have a responsibility to ourselves and others. Proverbs 18:21 says that life and death are in the power of the tongue. 

That means you have a choice to speak life to yourself…or death. You have the choice to speak life to and in front of someone else…or death.

I Know You!

I know you well enough to know you desire to speak truth and life. I know this because you wouldn’t be here if this wasn’t your hearts desire. People attracted to my podcast are those who want more for themselves and others. But wanting it is as good as wishing for it without an unwavering commitment rewrite the words you speak.
