An Old Age Interaction

I met a lady this past week who was talking about something she was trying to remember and in the same breath she said, “I can’t remember because I’m old.” 

I’m going to continue to remind you of this as long as God gives me breath. Ladies, quit excusing things like: forgetting something, aches you experience, going to bed early, not staying out late, your body not being where you want it to be….

 

I need to take you back to research that showed how much more rapidly we biologically age when we have a pessimistic view of aging (Listen to episode 71: ‘Your Words Are Aging You’ to hear more). It becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy, even when said in jest, because the mouth speaks what is in the heart.

The truth is, you forget things when you were 20, your body aches because you aren’t moving it as often, you go to bed early because you like to rise early and tackle your day and you know sleep needs to be prioritized, your body isn’t where you want it to be because perhaps life has gotten tough and you’ve lost sight of your health, or don’t know how to move your body in a way that works with your shifting hormones instead of against them.

 

Reframe your words. You are getting older…Praise God! But saying, “I’m old” is telling your brain you’ve accepted the status quo on aging which is to become increasingly forgetful, less mobile, less agile, weaker, less resilient, less adventurous, and so on.

What we don’t use we lose. So now that we know we need to stop saying those things, how can we help both our body and mind to stay youthful? And if you feel like they are both aging rapidly, how can we aid them in aging in reverse?

Aging the Brain in Reverse

Neuroplasticity refers to the brain’s ability to reorganize itself by forming new neural connections throughout life. This allows the brain to adapt to new experiences, learn new information, and recover from injury.

 

This, my friends, is an important step to keeping the brain young, sharp, interested in life, and pursuing adventures for decades. The more new information you try to learn, the more your brain reorganizes itself, increasing new neural connections, and keeps you young!

Research has shown that engaging in cognitive activities, such as learning a new language, playing a musical instrument, or mastering a new skill, can promote neuroplasticity and enhance cognitive function. 

 

So when you challenge the brain with new tasks and experiences it’s not accustomed to, you can maintain cognitive flexibility, improve memory, and reduce the risk of cognitive decline associated with aging such as dementia.

 

Boom, your brain game is now strong!

Age Reversal for the Body

Now let’s talk about new adventures through play & recreation (re-creation). When was the last time you did something new with your activity? Not only can it improve your balance, coordination, mobility and independence overall, but it can just be fun which makes life better.

 

Some examples:Dancing, yoga, martial arts, learning to play a new sport (think tennis or pickleball), just to name a few. All of these challenge the brain’s motor skills and spatial awareness which helps you remain physically younger while building resilience. Halleluyer! 

 

Biggie size it by adding a friend or 2 to the mix to get a good dose of community. By the way, by doing this you’re also supporting your brain health by increasing blood flow directly to the brain, reducing inflammation and oxidative stress.

We tend to think of aging in reverse as a form of out of reach, sci-fi movie that we could never possibly conceive of being practical for us. I hope these strategies show you how very much this can become your reality!
