Real talk here…being a mom is such a rewarding and challenging phase of life. And as your children grow up and become more independent, you may tend experience a sense of loss or confusion about your identity and purpose #anyonefeelinme?
This can be especially true for moms of older teens, young adults, or those who have recently become empty nesters. Today we’ll discuss ways to help you find what this next season may entail and how to re-establish your mission in this next phase.
My baby is not a baby anymore
One of the biggest milestones for parents of teenagers is when their child gets their driver’s license. My youngest, and last one left at home, just got hers a couple weeks ago and let me tell you, it threw me completely for a loop!
When I mentioned this in my stories, I attached a video of her driving away on her own for the very first time. Allll the emotions!
I had so many moms messaging me about how they totally understood the struggle of that fine line between letting them spread their wings, all the while wanting to wrap them in a cocoon of protection from the rest of the world!
We’re moms, so we worry
We worry about their safety and independence. We worry about car wrecks from careless fellow drivers on the road, about their own distractions, about Sharknado becoming a reality while they’re driving on the freeway!
We’re moms…so we worry!
AND, we find ourselves feeling a piece of our own heart driving away. As if our mission on earth must surely be complete…so now what?
Well, mama, I’m here to tell you that this season can be a time of growth and exploration for both our kiddos, and ourselves!
Ideas to make your next phase amazing!
As your child becomes more independent, you may have more time to focus on your own interests and hobbies (what what?!)
I’ve compiled some ideas to help you rediscover yourself, your purpose, who you are, and perhaps your next phase of fun, impact, and adventure!
- 1. Continue your education: If you've always wanted to go back to school or finish a degree, now is the time to do it. Look into online classes or local community college programs that interest you.
- 2. Nurture friendships: As your kids get older, playdates and school events become less frequent. It's important to make time for your friends and nurture those relationships. Plan get-togethers, go out to lunch, or start a book club.
- 3. Volunteer: Volunteering is a great way to give back to your community and make new connections. Find a cause you're passionate about and get involved. And bonus, volunteering has also been proven to extend quality and quantity of life!
- 4. Travel: Take a trip to a place you've always wanted to visit. Whether it's a weekend getaway or a longer vacation, traveling can be a great way to explore new places and experiences. Who wants to come dance with me???
- 5. Start a new hobby: Always wanted to learn how to knit or paint? Now is the time to try something new. Join a local class or find tutorials online to get started. Bonus points if it involves something active, but you do you!
- 6. Focus on your health: Prioritize your health and wellbeing by starting a new fitness routine, trying a new healthy recipe, or taking a yoga class.
- 7. Rediscover your career: If you've taken time off from your career to raise your children, now may be the time to re-enter the workforce or start a new career path.
- 8. Join a club or organization: Find a club or organization that interests you and join. Whether it's a gardening club or a hiking group, you'll meet new people and explore new activities.
- 9. Read: Reading is a great way to escape and explore new ideas. Join a book club or start a reading list of books you've always wanted to read.
- 10. Learn a new language: Always wanted to learn Spanish or French? Now is the time to do it. Look for language classes or online resources to get started.
- 11. Spend time with family: Just because your children are grown doesn't mean you can't enjoy spending time with them. Plan family outings or game nights to stay connected.
- 12. Deepen your faith: Take time to explore new ways to spend time with the Lord…maybe a vacation with just the two of you!
- 13. Start a business: If you've always had an entrepreneurial spirit, now may be the time to start your own business. Look into local resources and mentorship programs to get started.
I get it, being a mama to older children or being an empty nester can be a challenging and confusing time.
BUT, it can also be a time of growth and exploration. By trying new hobbies, focusing on your health and wellbeing, and rediscovering your purpose, you can find fulfillment and joy in this new chapter of your life. It’s our time…Let’s GOOOO!
